The 8th All Japan Best Sommelier Competition Organized by the Japan Sommelier Association (J.S.A.)

Wataru Iwata is “Japan's Best Sommelier” 2017

The 8th All Japan Best Sommelier Competition was held on April 11 (Tue.) and 12th (Wed.), 2017.
Those sommeliers winning 1st and 2nd place will participate in the 4th A.S.I. Contest of the Best Sommelier of Asia & Oceania to be held in Kyoto from October 15th to 17th, 2018.

The three finalists were as follows:
1st place: Wataru Iwata (27) Cave de K
2nd place: Taku Iguro (29) L'Osier
3rd place: Akihiko Nosaka (40) Hotel New Otani

The winner of the "8th All Japan Best Sommelier" and obtains the right to participate in the "4th A.S.I. Contest of the Best Sommelier of Asia & Oceania" and is qualified to participate in the Japan National Selection "A.S.I. World Best Sommelier Competition ".

Eligibility

All Japan Best Sommelier Competition is open to any individual who is:

  • A regular member or supporting member of the Japan Sommelier Association, and a J.S.A. certified sommelier.
  • Engaged in business falling under the definitions of a sommelier as of April 12, 2017 (does not apply to recent JSA Sommelier Scholarship awardees).
  • Receiving 60% or more of total income from his/her work as a sommelier (as defined by the Japan Sommelier Association).
  • Of Japanese nationality, or in case of a foreign nationality, he/she must have worked in Japan for at least 3 or more years.

Competition Process

  • National selection (March 6, 2017) 129 entrants
  • Quarter-final (April 11, 2017) 24 quarter-finalists
  • Semi-final (April 11, 2017) 12 semi-finalists
  • Final (April 12, 2017) 5 finalists


Examination Contents

The skills and knowledge as sommeliers were tested and observed from a wide range of perspectives, conducted in either English or French.
National selection:

  • Written test consisting of 60 questions, of a level equivalent of that of a world competition,
  • 2 types of blind tasting

Quarter-final:

  • Food pairing
  • Business skills--upon tasting a unique wine, decide whether or not to purchase; beverage coordination of a newly opened restaurant, i.e. event planning, sales and marketing.

Semifinal:

  • Written test
  • Service of white wine to 12 guests with an order of a glass of Champagne.

Final:

  • Correction of mistakes on a wine list
  • Testing of knowledge showing photos/images
  • Cocktail making
  • Blind tasting of liqueurs and spirits
  • Beverage suggestions for a buffet menu
  • Service of Sauterne and food suggestions
  • Red wine decantation, tasting and service
  • Serving a magnum bottle of Champagne (2 different serving portions)
