Andreas Larsson the Swedish competitor won the 12th Sommeliers World Competition

After two days of competition it was the Swedish Competitor Andreas Larsson who has been awarded Best Sommelier of the World on Sunday 20th of May. Three years after the last competition Greece has once again been the organizing country of the most important event of Sommellerie which is always awaited by all professional sommeliers worldwide. This time the International Sommeliers Association ASI, with the help of their long time partners Moët & Chandon and S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna organized the event on the splendid Island of Rhodes and more particularly in the Rhodos Palace Hotel. The title of Best Sommelier of the World has been awarded by ASI for 38 years now.

The winner is 35 years old and for works for PM & Friends Restaurants. He proved his great experience, his impeccable style and his personal knowledge, all of this helped him to be better than the other three competitors, the British Competitor Gérard Basset, the Swiss Paolo Basso and French Eric Zwiebel.

During the hard and difficult half finals on Saturday 19th of May the competitors had to prove their knowledge in written and practical tests. Whereas in the finals on May 20th the four finalists first competed in the field of organoleptic analysis of wines with analytic description and after that the recognition of several drinks. Another part of the finals was the practical service with a service simulation starring food and wine pairings, wine decanting and the correcting of a wine list containing errors.

The jury, some great experts in the field, did not only judge the wine knowledge of the competitors, but also their style, their way to move and the elegance of the service as well as their knowledge of foreign languages, all of which are important qualities for a sommelier.
For the first time S. Pellegrino & Acqua Panna awarded a price for the Sommelier with the greatest knowledge in water service. This award, a beautiful trophy of Murano glass represents the Master of waters the winner of the water award is Gérard Basset. Having been the Best in the Peter Lehmann Shiraz tasting, Gérard Basset has also won the Peter Lehmann Shiraz Award: a scholarship of 10.000 and a beautiful artwork from the Hess Art Collection.
