A lady sommelier,Véronique Rivest, Canada,Wins A.S.I. 2012 Best Sommelier of the Americas by beating two men in the Finals

Once again, the title of Best Sommelier of the Americas goes to a lady. And to Canada !

Véronique Rivest, sommelier of Restaurant Les Fougères, in Chelsea, Quebec, won the title  of 2012 Best Sommelier of the Americas. A lady from Canada !  Let’s remind that in 2009, in Buenos Aires, the title had also gone to a young Canadian lady-sommelier, Elyse Lambert. And in 2004, the winner was already Canada with Ghislain Caron.

Well done for the Canadian Sommellerie ! And also for talented ladies sommeliers whose number is really increasing all over the world.

Several ladies sommeliers had registered on the 23rd and 24th October in Bento Gonçalves, Brazil, within the beautiful frame of Hotel & Spa do Vinho, surrounded by vineyards. Véronique Rivest, Canada, Paz Levinson and Agustina de Alba, both from Argentina, Adriana Bidegain, Uruguay, Nancy Gonzalez from Venezuela…

Charming ladies, yes, but very professional and ready to fight against a bunch of male sommeliers ! Five ladies among the nineteen candidates come from Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, du Peru, Uruguay, USA and Venezuela.

After highly selective tests of semi-final and a final proposing live restaurant situations, Véronique won by beating the Brazilean Thiago Locatelli (2nd) and Ian Cauble (3rd) who represented the USA and was for the very first time participating in an international competition.

The scores of the semi-final revealed young talents still improving. Let’s particularly point out the performance of both Argentinean Paz Levinson and Agustina de Alba, of Canadian William Predhomme, of the second US representative, Alexander LaPratt, of Chilean Marcelo Pino, of Mexican Omar Barbosa… Some names that we will find again in the top results of the international contests.

Let’s remind that this A.S.I. Contest of the Best Sommelier of the Americas, organized every three years, allows all the associations of sommeliers from the American continent send one or two candidates fight for the title. It is a good opportunity for them to compare and evaluate their knowledge and skills in front of an international panel of judges placed under the authority of the Technical Commission of the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale, its responsible, Serge Dubs, and the A.S.I. president Shinya Tasaki. The honorary presidency went to Danio Braga, president of the Brazilean Association of Sommeliers that was in charge of the logistics for the competition.

The laureates were awarded the traditional A.S.I. gold, silver and bronze medals and received very nice gifts from sponsors of the event, Chandon, Nespresso, Arc International, Ibravin, and Hotel & Spa do Vinho.

Véronique Rivest took the opportunity to use her voucher and stay a couple of days longer in Bento Gonçalves and benefit of the experience of the Spa Caudalie no later than this very week end.
