The Dutch Sommelier Association (NGS) was founded in February 1986. The NGS has ca. 250 members. And a board of 8 members: Mr. Edwin Raben, president Mr. Peter Bruins, treasurer Mr. Bob Jurjens, secretary and PR manager Mrs. Heleen Boom, competition manager Mr. René Persoon, tasting commissioner Mr. Noël Vanwittenbergh, tasting commissioner Mr. Edger Groeneveld, tasting commissioner Mr. Job Seuren, competition manager and representative 'young sommeliers in the Netherlands' The secretary of the NGS during the last 25 years is Mrs. Marja Brouwer. The tasting commission of the NGS organizes a special tasting every month for the members of the NGS. Every other year the NGS organizes a sommelier competition for Dutch sommeliers. The winner of this competition is 'The Best Sommelier of the Netherlands' and represents the Netherlands during the European Championship and World Championship for sommeliers.

The National Competition is the Trophée Ruinart for the Best Sommelier of the Netherlands.

training

A committee of the NGS assisted to set up the first professional sommelier education in our country, which started in September 2001. Annually some 25 students receive their Gastronoom-Sommelier diploma.

activities and projects

The NGS organizes monthly tastings for members, of which three food and wine pairings.
A few times a year our members travel to wine producing areas. In the past we visited France (Champagne, Alsace, Loire, Bourgogne, Bordeaux, Languedoc, Cognac), Spain (Rioja, Penedes, Navarra, Ribera del Duero, Rias Baixas, Sherry), Germany (Mosel, Saar, Ruwer, Rheingau, Pfalz, Franken, Baden), Austria (Wien, Burgenland/Neusiedlersee, Kamptal, Kremstal, Wachau, Steiermark), Luxemburg, Italy (Toscane, Sicily), Portugal (Douro, Dao, Vinhos Verdes, Bairrada, Ribatejo, Alentejo), Hungary (Balaton, Szekszárd, Villány, Eger, Tokaj), California, Chili, Argentina, Australia and South Africa. - Incidentally seminars concerning wine growing, vinification etc. are being organized.
