National Sommeliers Contest 2017

The Asociación de Sommeliers Mexicanos (Mexican Sommeliers Association) had the Concurso Nacional de Sommeliers 2017 (National Sommeliers Contest 2017), last september 11th, such contest was certified by both the Alianza Panamericana de Sommeliers (Panamerican Sommeliers Association) and the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale, both this organisms congregate every sommeliers association in the world with more than 55 countries.

The sommeliers prepare themselves for this contest with several months of studies, knowing that the final prize is worth the effort, not just because of the travels, but because the winner will be acknowledged as “Mejor Sommelier de México 2017” (Mexico’s Best Sommelier 2017) and will represent Mexico at the “Mejor Sommelier de América” (Best Sommelier of the Americas) to be held at Montreal in 2018, and of course, at “Mejor Sommelier del Mundo” (Best Sommelier of the World) to be held at Brussels, Belgium in 2019.

Among the 3 finalists were: Steve Ayón, Manuel Negrete and Gerardo Téllez, the winner was Steve Ayón, Sommelier at El Palacio de Hierro.

The contest had theorical and practical tests with very difficult stages about every different thing in the sommeliers world, such as history, viniculture, viticulture, wine industry and a vast knowledge about world’s wines, labels, vintages, barrels and D.O.

In the tests, wines from the New World were found, such as Mexico, Chile, Australia, Brazil, Uruguay, Canada, Argentina, New Zealand and South-Africa; as well as the ones from the Old World, such as Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Bulgaria and Croatia, among others. Also, knowledge about other beverages was tested, such as liquors, coffee, tea, cigars, beers, sake and cheeses.

Another stage had the contestants to prove their knowledge, worthy of representing Mexico at the Best Sommelier of the World Contest 2019 in Belgium, was the wine and pairing service, as well as the blind tasting. At last, the final test was to correct a wine list with mistakes in the labels, vintages, region or appellation, knowledge that only a wine professional must know.
