Best Lithuanian Duval-Leroy Grand Prix Sommelier 2013

SakurosOn 6th of May, 2013 Narimantas Miežys became the winner of Lithuanian Sommelier Championship - Duval-Leroy Grand Prix 2013. The championship took place at „Kempinski Hotel Cathedral Square“which to the joy of its owners was represented by Narimantas Miežys. Narimantas was also the best at Louis Roederer Grand Prix in 2012. This time after an intriguing competition he has left Arminas Darasevičius (five-time winner of Lithuanian Sommelier Championship, restaurant „Time“) in the 2nd place. Albertas Koncijalovas was 3rd („Liviko“) and Marija Antanaitytė (the only female contestant, „Vyno klubas“) took the 4th place.

Arminas DaraseviciusThe winner was granted a trip to Champagne region and will represent Lithuania in European Sommelier Championship in Monaco and San Remo in September. Also all three prizewinners will represent Lithuania in Baltic Vana Tallinn sommelier championship in Riga in November.

In the second final the best in champagne pouring contest was Redas Norkeliūnas (restaurant „California gourmet“).  Other contestants: Laurynas Einas („ Vyno klubas“), Giedrius Lazutka („Kurorto vyninė“), Paulius Vanagas („Wine&Smile”), Ilja Šarov („Vyno klubas“), Andrius Pagojus („Vyno klubas“), Mindaugas Miežys („Saint Germain“), Kristijonas Stepšys („Lauro lapas“).

Contests and participants

This year finalists had to show their skills in dealing with champagne: they had to decant and serve a bottle of „Champagne Duval Leroy Brut“. The vice-president of Lithuanian Sommelier Association (LSA) Rasa Starkus who was preparing the task has said that decanting champagne becomes commonplace among champagne lovers. Nevertheless, this practice is rather new and international standards for performing this task have not been formed yet. Also the finalists had to correct mistakes in wine menus, pair wines with a food list, blind-test spirits and wines, match wines with a herring dish.

In semi-final which was held at Sommelier School earlier that day contestants had to perform traditional tasks: blind-test two wines, solve theoretical test, decant red „Chateau Teyssier“ wine. The jury of the championship was represented by the

president of Estonian Sommelier Association Kristel Nommik, the president of Latvian Sommelier Association Raimonds Tomsons, the president of Lithuanian Sommelier Association Arūnas Starkus, Vytautas Kratulis („Šviežia kava“ ) and Ona Jurkšienė.
