Year of joining the A.S.I.: 1969

The French Sommellerie Union federates 21 regional associations of professional sommeliers. The federation resulting from the union of the sommellerie of Paris and the sommellerie of Lyon, has gathered for many years, the French professional sommelier and takes part in the growth and evolution of the profession, lays the basis for the different work posts in the sommellerie, promotes connection among professionals, but above all, is concerned with young sommeliers who are the future of our profession. Since the year 2000, The U.D.S.F. is organised every two year the Best Sommelier of France Competition and the Best Young Sommelier of France and participates actively to the “One of the Best Workmen of France - Sommellerie department contest”. The presence of educators in the regional and national bureau gives U.D.S.F. direct contact with training as provided by the French Ministry of Education.

training

Training for careers in the sommellerie is provided by the French Ministry of Education through Hotel Technical Training Schools. There are two kinds of training programs: a Master in Sommellerie reserved for HTTS graduated students requiring a further year of study, there are approximately forty classes for fifteen students more or less. A Professional Sommelier certificate which requires two years training, provided by apprenticeship. A visit to wine regions is compulsory to validate the exam.
Four centers are available. U.D.S.F. is involved through educators who often are regional guild members or even bureau
members or Presidents of a region. U.D.S.F. members always act as jury during exams and actively take part in chosing the
subjects and evaluation sheets. Therefore, there is no need for the U.D.S.F. to create an educational system, since that of the
Ministry of National Education is higly satisfactory.

The U.D.S.F has just completed the definition of the different work posts in the sommellerie its description of activities and suggestion of salary-board, propose a letter of information to the “U.D.S.F. Info” members quarterly, will consider inclusion of young sommeliers in the associations as well as the support they could provide them with.
