Year of foundation: 2001
Year of joining the A.S.I.: 2002

The first school of sommeliers in Argentina was established in 1999 in Buenos Aires by Somm. Marina Beltrame, with the first 14 Argentine sommeliers graduating in 2000. One year later, in 2001, the Asociación Argentina de Sommeliers (AAS) was founded as a non-profit, non-governmental organization. In 2002 the AAS was admitted into ASI and organized its first Best Sommelier of Argentina contest. During all these years, sommellerie has seen tremendous growth in our country, with new schools for sommeliers, specialized media, better wine service at restaurants, etc. Last year the AAS was a co-founder of the Alianza Panamericana de Sommeliers (APAS), with the objective of reinforcing regional integration and developing sommellerie in the Americas. You can find out more about our association through our website, www.aasommeliers.com.ar

competitions

A first edition of the Concurso Mejor Sommelier de la Argentina was held in 2002 to select Argentina’s candidate for the 2004 world contest. The winner was Somm. Flavia Rizzuto. In 2006 came the second competition, with the objective to choose a candidate for the 2007 world contest, the Concurso Vino Argentino, un buen vino Mejor Sommelier de la Argentina 2006, and the winner was Somm. María Mendizábal. As of 2008, contests are going to be held every second year, and the next edition will be held later in 2008. In this field, we seek to train our candidates to achieve good results both in ASI’s contests and in the future APAS’ Panamerican competitions.

training

Today, there are four schools in Argentina that are sponsored by the AAS and grant official titles: the Escuela Argentina de Sommeliers (EAS), the Escuela Argentina de Vinos (EAV), the Centro Argentino de Vinos y Espirituosas (CAVE), and the Instituto L’ École. We work closely with them to further develop our métier, make sure they all comply with ASI’s standards, and continue improving the level of our services and food and wine industries.

activities and projects

We work in several areas to promote and improve sommellerie in Argentina, to represent our country abroad and within other national organizations, and to get benefits for our members. We organize at least two monthly tastings, get discounts at restaurants and wine stores, organize seminars and workshops, get invitations for our members to attend wine presentations and fairs, and run job searches through our data base. We are finalizing the launching of our new member cards and website, and getting ready for our main target for 2008: the organization of the Best Sommelier of Argentina contest.
