The 11th Competition for the World?s Best Sommelier took place in Greece, more specifically on the island of Santorini and in Athens.

 

During this significant event competitors from 43 countries took part, while the total number of national representative members and other participants was over 400 people.

 

The first stage of the Competition took place on Santorini island, where the representatives stayed between 6th and 9th of October. They then came to Athens where the second stage of the Competition took place. The four finalists took part in the Grand Final on Tuesday 12th October 2004 at 17:00, at the Athens Concert Hall.

 

The 7-day programme of the event also included 2 wine tasting exhibitions, one on Santorini and one in Athens, during which the products of 60 Greek wine producers were exhibited.  During the wine exhibition on Santorini the participants tasted dairy products as well as home-made cheese products from the Cycladic islands.

 

The Athens Acropolis, the Caldera of Santorini and the Ancient Theatre of Epidavros were amongst the sights that all of the participants visited. They were also given the opportunity to taste Greek cuisine in various restaurants of different styles.
